Congratulations to Redland Hunt Pony Club graduate Lara Metrione who married Jason Montgomery on April 14 in Jacksonville, Florida, where the couple now lives. T ey are pictured here with Gretchen and Robert Butts of Waredaca in Laytonsville.


Maryland Will Miss Jim Lewis of Davidsonville died on May 15.


Lewis ran Idlewilde Farm with his wife, USEF dressage judge Linda Zang. He was also a suc- cessful T oroughbred racehorse trainer for many years. T oroughbred owner and breeder Lillian J.


Horner died on January 9 at the age of 90. She grew up in Guilford but settled in Sparks. Sassy Hearted was one of her top racehorses, earn- ing $93,142. Horner’s horses were based out of Pimlico and Bowie. Lucy Webb of Sykesville died on Febru-


ary 6 at the age of 65. She was a trainer with deep roots in the racing world. Webb started ponying horses at Charles Town as a teenager, where her father was a trainer. Eventually she began training as well. She was also a farrier and a member of the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association at Charles Town and Penn National. As a trainer, Webb had 298 wins to her name, reaching $2,483,733 in purses. Margaret Randall Perry of Laytonsville died on April 27. Perry was an active Potomac Val- ley Dressage Association member. She was also a horse management offi cial for the Capital Region Pony Club for many years.

Brenda Curry of Days End Farm Horse Res- cue died on April 14 af- ter a battle with cancer. She was the president of Days End’s Board of Directors from 2010 to 2011 and helped to create the Distinguished Equine Citizen Award.


Nicholas J. Hartung, former huntsman and


farrier, passed away on May 17 at his home near Staunton, Virginia at the age of 72. Har- tung was a well- respected profes- sional huntsman, serving with Gos- hen Hounds from 1978 until 1989, when he and his wife, Ann moved from Maryland’s Middletown Val- ley to a farm in Virginia’s Shenan- doah Valley. Hartung started his hunting career with the New Forest Buckhounds in England. He was

After a season there, Hartung moved on to be kennel huntsman at the Middletown Valley Hounds (prior to the merger with New Market in 1981) before taking up the horn at Goshen in 1978. After moving to Virginia,


Hartung continued commuting a few days every week to Mary- land to shoe horses while Ann maintained their Five T orns Farm, specializing in breeding and training sport horses and ponies. T ey stood the stallions Keep Off and Bolderwood and raised many show ring and eventing champions. T ey also


bred lurchers and held annual lure coursing events at their farm.
