Driving west past rolling hills of fresh cut hay, Past Holsteins munching peacefully on lush green grass, Past horse farms and corn fi elds, Past old stonefi eld houses and cattle dogs, T rough the town of Jeff erson To a lovely red barn.


Into the barn… T ere he stood. His head down in front of the fan, Forelock blowing in the breeze. Chestnut and white splashed everywhere. Gangly, with a kind eye.


Let’s ride him.


Showmanship in the soft sand arena: T e horse knew more than I did. T e owner mounted up. Walk.

Hooves beating like a drum on the sand Sliding to a halt in two seconds. A cloud of dust around his haunches.

We have gone through so much together: A bad fall, Going over cross-country jumps. Showing.


People either give the credit to the horse or the rider, But what they don’t understand is… It’s a team, A relationship that is never ending, Always growing, Getting stronger.
