IHSA Launches Service Awards

T e Intercollegiate Horse Show Association launched a new Service Award for the 2011- 2012 season. T e award is to recognize teams that give back to their community in some way. T e IHSA also hopes the award program will

encourage more teams to participate in com- munity service projects to help build team spir- it, leadership skills and increase awareness of the team on campus and within the surround- ing community. Service awards are presented to teams at the Regional, Zone and National level. At the IHSA National Championships, the three win- ning teams (one for teams of 1-15 riders, one for teams of 16-30 riders and one for teams of 31 or more riders) are presented with perpetual trophies, which they can keep for one year, and keeper trophies. In addition, Olympic Show Jumper Peter Leone also rewards service award

winning teams with a clinic. “It is the highest honor for me to recognize and support the young horsemen who ‘dared and cared’ to make a diff erence,” Leone said. Goucher College won one of this year’s

awards for their Healing Hooves event, which raised $11,000 to benefi t fi ve area therapeu- tic riding programs. A clinic with Leone was held at Goucher in April for both Goucher and Gettysburg College students, who also won an award. Other winners were University of the South, Drew University, Mount Holyoke Col- lege, Colby College, Middle Tennessee State University and Centenary College.
