Maryland’s Youth Soar to New Heights

From Pony Races to the Kentucky Oaks At this year’s Kentucky Oaks Grade 1 race

at Churchill Downs (May 4), Maryland’s own Rosie Napravnik raced into the history books as being the fi rst female jockey to have ever won the race. Rosie was aboard Brereton C. Jones’ fi lly Be- lieve You Can, who edged out Broadway’s Alibi to win by 3/4 lengths for trainer Larry Jones.

Rosie got her

racing start right here in Maryland as a junior pony jockey, as well as a pony clubber. Her fi rst race was a fourth place fi nish aboard Sweet Sensation at the 1996 Brandywine Hills Point-to-Point Junior Flat race. T e following year, Rosie and Sweet Sensation fi nished fi rst or second in sev- eral small pony races. Rosie moved up the racing ranks through the North American Point-to- Point program moving on to Junior Field Mas- ter Chases on the horse French Revolution. Her passion was always the fl at races and she gained experience at the point-to-points before switching over to the fl at tracks. T ere she con- tinued to excel, being nominated for an Eclipse Award in 2009. In 2011, she became the fi fth female jockey in history to ride in the Kentucky Derby.

Equiery’s Western Winner T e Equiery’s fi rst winner of the Western

Award, Mary Lentz, shared her thoughts on the new award and what it is like to compete on Maryland’s western circuit. I think I was more excited that T e Equiery decided to have a Western award winner [than actually being the winner]! Western pleasure and horsemanship classes are more diffi cult than they look. T e horse has to maintain a quiet, consistent way of going while staying round and collected; all this with one hand and a drape in the reins. I am glad that I was the fi rst winner and it will be nice to see many more people win in the years to come. My plans for 2012 will be to continue to show

my very favorite horse, Stait To You, a sorrel Quarter Horse gelding. I just hope to improve on my riding and showing skills and that my success in 2012 is equal to or greater than 2011. We have started off the year well with points in Western Pleasure, Showman- ship and Equitation. We even earned an All-around Reserve Champion ribbon in the Novice Youth division at my last show. I just want to thank my parents and trainer for help- ing and supporting me along the way!
