Transformation on the cards for Southampton and Bournemouth

Two major developments have been approved which are set to transform parts of Southampton and Bournemouth.

Planning consent has been granted for MDL Marinas’ joint venture with Nicolas James Group, owner of Harbour Hotels, for the development of Southampton Harbour Hotel & Spa at MDL’s Ocean Village Marina (computer generated image above).

It includes not only a new luxury hotel and spa, but also 82 waterfront apartments and restaurants/retail premises. The hotel will have a number of flexible function rooms and is set to be a popular attraction during the annual Southampton Boat Show.

Adjacent to it, MDL Marinas and Harbour Hotels are looking to deliver a new retail and restaurant arcade at the front of the marina. Harbour Hotels hopes to bring chef Alex Aitken to the site to deliver another high- end restaurant similar to the Jetty at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel in Dorset.

Eamonn Feeney, managing director of MDL Marinas Group, said: “The decision will enable us to deliver the final stage of the master plan for Ocean Village Marina and create a vibrant waterfront destination for the city.“

Harbour Hotels owns a number of award- winning hotels and restaurants across southern England, reinventing traditional seaside breaks with upmarket escapes to the coast.

THE BUSINESS MAGAZINE – SOLENT & SOUTH CENTRAL – JUNE 2012

Further along the coast, plans to to redevelop the Bournemouth International Hotel and Ocean Palace restaurant on Priory Hill and replace them with a new larger restaurant, 57 self-contained flats and nine holiday apartments with underground parking, have been agreed by Bournemouth Borough Council.

The site is prominent within the tourism area and its redevelopment will contribute towards the council’s wider objectives for the regeneration of that part of the town centre.

John Montgomery, director of Tanner & Tilley town planning consultants, which is working on the project for its client Landmark Estates, commented: “We have been working closely with the council to ensure our proposals fully compensate for the loss of the Bournemouth International Hotel and Ocean Palace by providing exclusive self-catering apartments and a new Chinese restaurant. The imaginative design will sit comfortably between the recently-approved Hotel School, next to the BIC, and the West Cliff Conservation Area.“

Added James Roberts from Anders Roberts and Associates architects: “The design is contemporary and simple, and while respecting the historic character of the neighboring conservation area, it utilises high-quality materials and cutting-edge design.“

IP advice clinic will be free for students

A senior law lecturer from the Portsmouth Business School has won £30,000 to set up an intellectual property (IP) clinic for entrepreneurial students to access free IP advice from School of Law students.

Joe Sekhon’s project was one of 13 out of 50 to receive funding from the Intellectual Property Office’s (IPO) Fast Forward Competition, which has provided £750,000 for projects that improve the management of IP and knowledge exchange. The IPO is the official government body responsible for granting IP.

The clinic, entitled ’The Intellectual Property Advice and Support Service’ (iPass), will allow students and graduates starting their own companies to access advice on how best to protect and commercialise their invention, idea or intellectual property. Law students can volunteer themselves to become iPass champions and if they are successful after interview they will receive intensive training at an iPass boot camp.
