technology 13 A new champion for SMEs

With its successful strategy of careful acquisition, operational enhancement and brand consolidation now complete, Pulsant is set to fuel rapid growth by championing the data needs of Thames Valley SMEs

CEO Mark Howling comments: “From retail and professional services to elearning and manufacturing, the amount of data – even within non IT-related mid-market companies – is exploding.

Internet, intranets, mail,

ecommerce, online training, web applications and Internet-delivered software are fuelling online traffic and complexity. To cope, companies will need more servers and more reliable ways to store, manage, safeguard and connect their data.

“That’s where we come in. Pulsant takes the pain out of storing and managing data: keeping it safe, making it available and ensuring it can be accessed and processed efficiently.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)-style technologies, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and mobile cloud apps.

It believes that these new applications will accelerate demand for cloud storage in 2012, particularly within the Thames Valley. It also predicts that many SMEs will re-examine cloud storage to help them cope with increased data footprints as information management, analytics and remote and mobile working become vital to their performance.

It provides the data platforms and

infrastructure that link audiences, workteams and customers; and provides the foundation for modern SMEs’ competitive success.“

Powerful solutions and datacentres

Pulsant does this with a portfolio of custom- designed solutions that include cloud, colocation, managed hosting, managed applications and managed networking.

Its

emphasis is on delivering professional, highly-configurable solutions – all backed by a philosophy of ’support with passion’ and 24/7 reliability.

’... the amount of data – even within non IT-related mid-market companies – is exploding’

Howling says: “We anticipate that demand for hosting and colocation will rise as Internet traffic increases and SMEs seek to outsource infrastructure in the face of rising IT, hardware, staffing, energy and real estate costs. And with almost 3,000 total rackspace capacity, Pulsant is well placed to service the SME segment.“

One of the UK’s largest ’independent’ hosting and colocation providers, Pulsant has 150,000 sq ft of total data centre Net Technical space. With eight ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 certified and PCI compliant datacentres in five locations: Edinburgh, Milton Keynes, Maidenhead, Reading and south London, the company can service SMEs from Scotland’s Silicon Glen to the Thames Valley and London.

Howling adds: “All of our sites, including those in Reading and Maidenhead, feature next generation 10Gb core network infrastructure, 38Mw diverse power supplies, and N+1 DC Power, network and advanced cooling for maximum reliability and efficiency. Exactly what SMEs need to help them perform better.“

“The scale of our business gives customers the reassurance that we are of sufficient size and stature to invest in the tools that many smaller companies and suppliers can’t. Our aim is to be the ’blue chip’ supplier for mid-sized organisations – with a ’personality’ that reflects our highly customer-focused approach.“

Howling confirms: “We already have £6 million allocated in 2012 for further enhancing our datacentres, recruiting additional staff and targeted sales initiatives. We will continue to work closely with partners such as Microsoft and HP to deliver ’best in class’ solutions. At the same time, we are enhancing our data facilities with even faster inter-site connections and new energy saving technologies, including cold aisle containment.

“By October, we will also have 100% of our power provided from renewable energy sources. A major focus this year will be the expansion of our facilities south of London to create a dedicated hosting and colocation ’campus’ – ideal for businesses looking to move their data storage from expensive central London facilities where space is at a premium.“

Driving cloud

Involved in cloud hosting since its inception over 10 years ago, Pulsant confirms that it is increasingly SMEs – not large corporates – that represent the vanguard behind Software as a Service (SaaS),

Howling explains: “Cloud computing, be it private or public, is now a major strategy for any CIO aiming to help their organisation deliver high-quality services to internal audiences and customers. It enables them to make use of a variety of channels, while operating efficient data flows. Both public and private clouds use virtualisation software to create ’virtual server’ environments – on infrastructure either owned and shared across a single organisation (private cloud) or rented and shared across many different businesses (public cloud). Offering elastic provisioning and optimised data performance, cloud reduces the volume, power and costs associated with traditional server solutions.“

In the past some SMEs have been reluctant to embrace cloud as virtualisation can carry a 3% increase in overhead compared to traditional hosting. However, time and experience has revealed that for many organisations, overall operational savings are returned tenfold. Indeed, many of Pulsant’s own customers report a 40% reduction in their storage running costs after embracing cloud computing.

Howling confirms: “As many SMEs turn to cloud, we are helping them get the best out of their investment by making it easier to choose a system that’s right for them.

“It’s all about building reassurance and establishing trust – vital if we are to see mass adoption of cloud hosting across SMEs. This means supporting cloud with better firewalling, more rigorous IP management and fail over processes. Taking all this into consideration, using cloud from a proven supplier with certified processes and offering 24/7 support, will undoubtedly become the preferred route to cloud success.“
