Basking in Looe
Many people out enjoying the sunny weather recently did not expect the chance to get ‘up close and personal’ with a basking shark!
Estimated to be in the region of 10 feet long the shark glided into Looe river and spent an hour swimming about in the harbour, oblivious to the excited attention it was receiving.
Crowds flocked to the river’s edge to get as close as possible, and along the quaysides for a grandstand view.
There was a rush to the Banjo Pier as it made its way out to sea again.

Local boatman and the RNLI Operations Manager David Haines, said the last time he could remember basking sharks in the river was about 18-20 years ago when there was more than one.
‘They couldn’t find their way out and we had to herd them with small boats to the harbour entrance,’ he said. Basking sharks, the largest fish living in British waters, are not of the ‘jaws’ variety and are completely harmless, feeding on plankton.
