Looe shake up order with best-ever display

Looe Rowing Club’s Cornish Pilot Gig crews sprang the surprise of the World Champion-ship weekend by securing a terrific second place in the men’s event.

While the Falmouth crew in Black Rock pulled to overall victory, Looe’s young crew in Talisman ousted the Saltash-based Caradon, in Amazon, from the runners-up berth.

The 23rd annual Worlds attracted more than 3,000 people to Scilly but few of them were happier than the rowers from Falmouth, who clinched a men and women’s double, and the Looe contingent, who produced their best-ever display.

Jamie Chudleigh and Mike White’s young char-ges were simply outstanding, breaking the Caradon- Falmouth grip on the sport with a superb display, which augurs well not only for this season but for future World Championships as well.

It wasn’t just the young ones who were enjoying the weekend, either.

For the first time ever a special race

for those rowing enthusiasts over the age of 50 was introduced, and the SuperVets were among the most enthusiastic competitors in a crammed programme of races.

The girls, too, were having a say in proceedings with entries for the women’s events outnumbering those in the men’s divisions. Almost 130 boats had been shipped to the islands for the event, and of the eight new Cornish Pilot Gigs one of them, Tregarthen’s,was built for the host club, St Mary’s. She was formally blessed and launched by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Col Edward Bolitho. Most of the usual race winners took part and even the perennial losers remained upbeat for this ever-popular event.

The Dorset club of Portland were the news kid on the block and, like Clevedon from North Somerset, were attending their first Worlds.

Men (48 entries): 1, Falmouth (Black Rock); 2, Looe (Talisman); 3, Cara-don (Amazon); 4, Par Bay (Warrior); 5, Roseland (Polvarth); 6, Devoran (Irene).
