CHAIN REACTION!

BEACONS WILL BLAZE TO MARK DIAMOND JUBILEE

HOT SPOT: On Monday,

June 4, Newton Abbot will join the rest of the country in

celebrating the Queen’s

Diamond Jubilee by lighting beacons at

Wolborough, Highweek and Buckland.

T

HE Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebra- tions will be marked on Monday, June 4, with that most ancient of traditions,

the lighting of fire. Her Majesty has graciously agreed to set

the National Beacon ablaze following the concert at Buckingham Palace and across the globe people will be holding their own similar ceremonies. Newton Abbot will be no exception, with prominent spots in Wolborough, Highweek

and Buckland being chosen for the occasion, all three sites visible from one another. Members of the town council will perform the honours with timber loaded into beacon cages set high above the ground. Britain has for centuries employed such signals at times of great importance. They have warned of advancing armies and threats to our sovereignty; equally they have been at the heart of national rejoicing such as Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

In 1977 and 2002 beacons were lit to com- memorate The Queen’s Silver and Golden Jubilees.

On December 31, 1999, a chain of fire was set across the country to herald the start of a new millennium. For that occasion the National Beacon was set on a River Thames barge and lit by Her Majesty The Queen.

Once again this summer we will fill the night sky with living flames as we give thanks for Queen Elizabeth’s glorious 60- year reign. Make sure you look out for them.
