W The SouthWest Chat
elcome to the May issue of SouthWest Horse Trader. We have a full assortment of coverage ranging from the livestock shows to Ranch
Horse to theASHANationalCollegiateChampionships. The biggest topic of conversation on Facebook or at
the barn or showfor the lastweek or so has been on cheat-
ing.Not cheating on your spouse and all that drama, but cheating in the horse industry. What rights does a Na- tionalOrganization have to itsmembershipwhen amem- ber has not exhibited good moral character? less conformationly perfect?Does itmean that on the day shown, he was not placed correctly? Does the horse exhibit poor character?Howdoes the rulebook address these issues? At what point have we entered a gray area? What if thatmember is one of thewinningest ex-
hibitors, owners, and top breeder. What if their name is on the top line in the record book? What is the right thing to be done?Do the accomplishments count? Aperson is innocent until proven guilty even if
you personally would like to lead the lynchingmob. You cannot strip titles fromsomeone just because the media and Facebook are in a
frenzy.Themedia has a knack for leading with the story that has the biggest bang for their dollar, not necessary waiting for the court to do their
job.Remember, innocent until proven
guilty. And Facebook, well, strategic stirring of the pot by “interested” parties leads to half truths and speculation fueled as the rumors become a Facebook
reality. After all these “interested” parties are certainly privy to the confidential investigation and have a red phone to the judge, FBI, and lawyers. Wewill soon all have our answers. w
