Dr. Henry Lodge, an assistant clini- cal professor of medicine at Colum- bia University in New York, took part in a recent teleconference. He said it's a "crazy model" that has people retiring at 65 and "suddenly you stop having relevance" and that becomes a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

"If we thought of 65, or whatever one's 'retirement' age is, as the be- ginning of a long new phase, with a lot of reinvention, a lot of new chal- lenge, a lot of new learning, and gave that a broad social construct, what you'd find is that cognitive func- tion among people over 65 would rise dramatically, and they'd begin to realize all of this potential that's locked in there," Lodge argued.

I'm all for rising cognitive function; some days more than others! Different words for the same initia- tive of our lives - rebranding, rein- vention, both with the same mean-

ing. It's a time to learn what ELSE we can do. It's a time to live our dream. Because this is where we're going and I'm just getting started. ©Marcia Barhydt, 2012
