During his trip to the Isle Of Man, our editor had the opportunity to meet the new owner of the island’s prestigious Castletown Golf Club, Philip Vermeulen, a man keen to turn the club’s fortunes around.
C
astletown Golf Links was rated in the top one hundred golf courses in the British Isles only five years ago. Sadly, under previous ownership, the course was allowed to deteriorate, with little or no money being made available.
So, Philip Vermeulen, also a member of the club, thought he’d step in to change its fortunes with some much needed investment. £140,000 was immediately made available for Mark Kitching, the club’s Head Greenkeeper for many years, to invest in new machinery. Ransomes Jacobsen was the chosen supplier and a range of new mowers, tractors and golf buggies have now been purchased. These include -

Philip Vermeulen is an
entrepreneur on the island and, as part of the plan to re- establish the Castletown Golf Links as an integral part of the Manx leisure and tourism industry, one of his first projects will be to build a new
clubhouse, creating a three story building, to replace the ageing old building. The new
clubhouse, for which a planning application has been submitted, is essential in establishing a sense of belonging and
