the need for irrigation, compared to chemical fertilisers. Soil structure is improved by the humus content, and root structure is generally increased, making the plant even more drought stress tolerant. Disease is also generally less prevalent because of two factors. Firstly, a healthy, vibrant plant is less susceptible to disease and, secondly, the rich and diverse soil micro flora that are fed and encouraged by using organic food sources mean there is less space in the soil for harmful pathogens.
It is a bit like a cinema. If you fill all the seats with good guys, there is less room for troublemakers. Some of these microorganisms encouraged are actually antagonistic towards disease. Others help release nutrients locked up in the soil, fix nitrogen and a whole host of other beneficial functions that help plants grow.
Nutrients released from organic products tend to do so slowly, which also reduces the impact of potential pollution of water sources, another environmental benefit. The problem with organic fertilisers is that they are quite difficult to make into a form and quality that modern fine turf managers can accept. Typical problems are strong smell, dust and uneven granules that don’t spread evenly and may be too big for fine turf use.
One of the main reasons for
Rendapart’s success is that they have succeeded in producing very evenly graded mini- granules that are low in odour and are virtually dust free. They are totally homogeneous, so every granule contains all ingredients, unlike a blended fertiliser.
The required mix of organic ingredients, chosen to give a selected NPK analysis and release characteristics, is blended into a fine paste, which is pressed out through small holes in rotating drums. This is dried and crumbled, then carefully graded into even granule sizes for fine turf, outfield or grower uses by being shaken through various sieves. The extraordinary part is the care that is taken to remove all dust during this process, also

along conveyors and even during packing of the finished products.
It is this process that gives a lovely even graded and virtually dust free granule. An enormous vacuum system (see photo), the size of a good-sized house, sucks away dust at every possible point in the production process.
In environmental terms,
Rendapart tick all possible boxes. The factory is highly automated, such that its substantial output is maintained by a workforce of around just twelve people.
The four hectares of factory roof houses 2,375 solar panels that produce enough natural electricity to power the entire plant, and even export power to the grid.
All organic ingredients are carefully sourced to exclude GM plant material and any possible pollutants, such as heavy metals present in some leather meals used by other manufacturers. As a result, the company has managed to achieve Soil Association approval for many of its products for organic food production. Turf managers understand that there are times of year and situations when there is still a place for conventional fertilisers, but most are increasingly incorporating a higher proportion of organic products into their programmes, with undoubted improvements in turf quality and health. It is this demand that is making that second factory in Belgium more needed by the day.
