It Always Goes Back to ‘Star Trek’

Posted March 30, 2012, by JVH A previous post (“I Laughed Until I Cried,” March 30) about a comment that all revenue control machines seem the same except for the color reminded me of the old “Star Trek” episode starring Frank Gorshin. But before I go on, let me hasten to add that, certainly, there

are substantial differences among revenue control machines — much of it internal, some of it external. That having been said, and much like mid-priced cars from Japan, it’s often difficult for the uninitiated to tell the difference. With that disclaimer in mind, consider the 1969 “Star Trek”

episode “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield,” in which Gorshin (as Commissioner Bele) and Lou Antonio (as Lokai) are fighting a battle to the death because of their different appearances. Bele and Lokai are half black and half white, literally. There is a line down the center of their faces, and half of the face is black and half white. Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) can’t tell the difference, and Bele patiently explains that he is black on the right and white on the left, and that Lokai is black on the left and white on the right. You can look up the rest of the story on Wikipedia, if you care. Once again, this is not to say that paint color is what

separates one revenue control company from another, but there certainly is a perception among many of their customers that the differences can be measured in inches and not miles. JVH

Posted March 29, 2012, by JVH Last night was party night at the Intertraffic Amsterdam

2012 show. I made only two, with a dinner in between, but I did last until after midnight, a new record. The evening started innocently enough with the Metric crew

on a floating Chinese restaurant. I walked in and was greeted with a draft Heineken, naturally, but by a rousing group one might hope to find in a pub in the Midlands of England. Laughter, stories and every accent from Aussie and Scot to Yorkshire and even a Yank or two. I knew it was time to bail when a partygoer reminded me of an evening I spent in São Paulo, Brazil, and he wasn’t even there. During the Metric party, I received a text from T2 System’s

Irena Goloschokin and one of her colleagues, who suggested I meet them in front of the NH Hotel near the Leidseplein. Of course, there are about a dozen NH hotels in the area, and I selected the wrong one. After we sorted that out, the question was where to go for dinner. A T2 VP and a Publisher couldn’t make a decision, so we went into the restaurant that was 10 feet away,
