• 49CFR Part 40 (as noted above) and DOT agency drug and alcohol testing rules;
• Key DOT drug testing requirements, including collections, laboratory test- ing, MRO review, and problems that occur during drug testing;
• Key DOT alcohol testing require- ments, including the testing process, the role of BATs and Screening Test Technicians (STTs) and problems that may occur during alcohol testing; and
• SAP qualifications and prohibitions. You must also get training about the
SAP’s role in the return-to-duty process, which includes: • Initial employee evaluation; • Referrals for education and/or treatment;
• Follow-up evaluation(s) procedures; • Scheduling and procedures for the follow-up testing plans;
• Recommendations for continued treatment;
• SAP consultation and communica- tion with employers, MROs, and treatment providers;
• Requirements for reporting and recordkeeping; and
• Issues SAPs deal with during perfor- mance of their duties in this program. At the end of your basic training, you
must pass an examination administered by a nationally recognized professional or training organization, which covers what you’ve studied in the list above. Even after you have received your ini- tial certification, the training continues.
To become a SAP, you’ll need to meet specific requirements for credentials, basic knowledge, and
