Narcotics Overdose Prevention & Education Taskforce (NOPE)
1. Get Help 2. Get Educate 3. Get Involved
T
hese are the main objectives of NOPE. NOPE was developed after the Florida Office of Drug
Control realized that Palm Beach County had the fastest growing rate of fatal drug overdoses in the state and were then asked to take action. The com- munity leaders and families who had lost loved ones to drug overdoses banded together in hopes of preventing more unnecessary drug related deaths. The group decided to target the youth with a presentation entitled, Narcotic Overdose Prevention and Education. (NOPE) The presentation consisted of statistics and commentary on drug abuse and ended with emotional stories of parents who lost children. This was first presented in 2002–2003. From this presentation, NOPE was formed in 2004 as a non- profit organization developed to deliver educational messages to students, pro- vide resources for treatment and to reach youth beyond Palm Beach County. Avail- able at the website,
www.nopetaskforce. org, are various resources listed under each of NOPE’s main objectives.
“Get Help”—features a section called
ask Amy or Adam, where users can ask specific questions about drugs and/or alcohol or even obtain advice. The “Get Help” section also features links to treat- ment facilities and organizations that aid family members of drug users. “Get Educated”—provides links to
facts on drugs and alcohol, information about addiction, and prescription drug abuse statistics. There are specific sec- tions for parents and students. NOPE programs and even a section devoted to student certification (for community service hours) and scholarships are also featured. “Get Involved”—is a section devoted
to supporting NOPE. As a 501c3 non- profit corporation, the NOPE Task force survives on contributions by individuals and organizations, requiring both time and money. There is also a schedule of events and a section with information on how a person or group can start their own chapter. The problems of drug addiction affect
everyone. NOPE values the help of com- munity partners and alliance members. Please take advantage of the valuable in- formation available on their website and through their many presentations. ❚
