Welcome... Lynne Garton – Editor


Director of her own nutrition consultancy business, Lynne has held acute and primary care dietetic roles at St. Bartholomews, St. George’s and West London Healthcare NHS trust.Three years spent in industry, coupled with her varied NHS experience and growing media involvement, has enabled Lynne to offer knowledge across the scope of clinical, medical and health nutrition.


With the Olympics fast approaching it seems that sport is currently receiving a fair deal of media attention. Whether this interest will actually drive people to increase their activity levels, as was anticipated when London won the bid seven years ago, is yet to be seen. However what does seem to be getting people more active is the charity event Sport Relief. On a daily basis I receive something about this event, whether it’s press releases or sponsorship requests. Even my husband has got in on the act! For someone who has been fairly inactive for the last 20 years, recently he has got into cycling and running. He now enjoys it so much he has started competing in triathlons. So when he announced that he was cycling up Box Hill in Surrey (for those who don’t know this hill, it’s more like a mountain than a hill!) for Sport Relief, of course I had to sponsor him. Whether it is individuals up for a challenge, or companies who plan to raise large amounts of cash, it seems like huge numbers are participating. While these events are all about fun, there’s also a serious side. The money that is raised goes to help people in dire need, whether it’s at home or abroad. For example, in this country, it gives comfort and help to vulnerable older people. It also helps people in disadvantaged communities living with poor mental or physical health. Of course, in our profession, we see these sorts of people on a daily basis. This is especially true of those suffering with malnutrition and, with this in mind, we have decided to explore a number of key topics around this extensive issue that has huge implications within the community. In our Big Story Anne Holdoway, Specialist Dietitian in Gastroenterology & Nutrition Support and Chair of the PEN Group of the BDA, discusses the different strategies to identify and manage malnutrition in the community on page 11.


Staying with this theme, Rebecca McManamon, Primary Care Dietitian, highlights the importance of complying with oral nutritional supplements in the first of our Hot Topics on page 21. In addition, a new interactive training package, developed by the Focus on Undernutrition service, is explained in the second of our Hot Topics on page 32.


Also in this issue we report on a couple of recent conferences. The first, on page 27, is Coeliac UK’s event, held at the Royal College


of Pathologists in February this year, where new approaches to the diagnosis, prevention and practice of coeliac disease were presented. The second, on page 37, was a special satellite symposium, held at the 11th European Nutrition Conference (FENS 2011), which reviewed eating patterns that benefit both the environment and the nations health.


That just leaves me to say good luck to all of you who are taking part in any charity sporting events. You never know you may just see some of the CN Team participating in one of your local activities!
