Undernutrition e-learning | Hot Topic
The website and e-learning were formally launched at Darlington Memorial Hospital by County Durham and Darlington Foundation Trust Chief Executive Sue Jacques and Chairman Tony Waites.
Delegates had
the opportunity to interact with the e-learning programme directly and to appreciate the variety of learning methods and tools incorporated. The e-learning packages have been developed as
an alternative, more flexible approach to providing training for staff working in the community and care homes. Benefits of the FoU e-learning packages are: • A flexible way for an individual or an organisation to tackle undernutrition
• • • •
Detailed training on the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (‘MUST’)
Incorporates simple processes to identify and treat undernutrition
Promotes food first as treatment of undernutrition
Clear pathways for appropriate prescribing and monitoring of oral nutritional supplements
• Contributes to continual professional development
• The e-learning system is SCORM compliant to work alongside staff electronic records
• Management reports can be provided to organisations on individual learners
•
Cost-effective training with up to 47% savings on bulk purchases Taking approximately two to three hours to
complete, the learner can access training at a convenient time and work at their own pace. The package also incorporates assessment, which includes two case studies, care planning using ‘MUST’ and 10 multiple choice questions.
A pass
mark of at least 60 per cent is required in order to pass the module; a certificate is automatically generated for the learner to print for their portfolio and retain as evidence of continuing professional development. There are a variety of learning methods
included: video learning, drag and drop activities, click to reveal, completing ‘MUST’ interactively, multiple choice questions, typed responses and reflective practice. The design of the e-learning packages ensures that it is user friendly, easy to navigate, avoids jargon and incorporates interactive tasks. Information sheets and resources are
downloadable throughout both e-learning packages, including: ‘MUST’, nourishing snacks, nourishing drinks, fortified drinks leaflets, ulna height conversion charts, and care pathways.
These can
then be implemented into the workplace. Links to key national guidance and
documentation are provided as direct links in the e- learning training package. There is comprehensive content with relation to
nutritional screening using ‘MUST’, care plans and treatment, which are in line with key national standards, such as: • Department of Health (DH, 2006) • Care Quality Commission (CQC, 2010) • Council of Europe (2008)
‘
The challenges of preventing undernutrition should not be under estimated. It is essential that healthcare staff are equipped with the knowledge to understand the importance of good nutritional care. The Focus on Undernutrition e-learning resource will be a valuable resource in helping healthcare staff to recognise individuals who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition and to implement appropriate
and practical care pathways to support those at risk. Caroline Lecko - Patient Safety Lead, National Patient Safety Agency
