Welcome from the Chief Executive

Welcome to the Spring/Summer 2012 edition of St Giles Hospice News.

Hospices are traditionally viewed as providers of specialist care for patients with complex needs towards the end of their lives – and while that is still a major part of what we do, we also strive to make our expertise in care more widely available to those in need across the locality.

As I’m sure you are aware, the healthcare system is going through a significant period of change, and here at St Giles Hospice, we want one of those changes to be that hospices are given a major say in how end-of-life care is provided.

We feel that the specialist expertise hospices possess means they should not only be heavily involved in helping to shape healthcare policy, but also be given a lead role in the delivery of end-of-life care in the community.

At St Giles we are already working closely with the NHS to find innovative new ways in which we can improve the end-of-life experience for those across the local area.

As an independent charity, we are able to do this while retaining our freedom to tailor our services in a way that our patients and carers want.

It is thanks to the generosity of you, our supporters, that we are able to maintain our services. This means we can ensure the people in the St Giles Hospice catchment area receive specialist care while the local healthcare landscape as a whole benefits from our innovative ideas and methods.

We’re grateful as ever, on behalf of our patients, for your wonderful generosity, and long may it continue!

In fact, there’s a new way in which you could help us develop the services we offer – find out more by reading the ‘Could you help us?’ article alongside.

Care Quality Commission

St Giles Hospice has received a glowing endorsement from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for the standard of services provided at our Whittington hospice.

Inspectors from the CQC, which checks all hospitals in England to ensure they are meeting government standards, gave our facility in Fisherwick Road a unanimous thumbs-up.

They found the hospice met the required level in all key areas, which include treating people with respect, the provision of care, treatment and support to meet people’s needs, caring for people safely plus standards of staffing and management.

St Giles Chief Executive, Peter Holliday says: “We are delighted with the findings because it’s highly unusual to receive a report that doesn’t require some sort of change in working practices.

“The job of the Care Quality Commission is to ensure standards are being met and the report confirms that we are doing just that.”

To view the report, visit www.cqc.org.uk and search for “St Giles Hospice Whittington”.

“We do not know how we would have

managed without your support. The whole team, without exception, were brilliant.”

Could you help us?
