Simon takes on board role

Legal expert and community stalwart Simon James has succeeded Peter Durrant as Chairman of St Giles Hospice Board of Trustees.

A senior partner of Ansons LLP Solicitors, of Lichfield and Cannock, the father-of-one from Yoxall has been a St Giles trustee since 2001.

Simon says: “My challenge is to provide strategic advice and direction for St Giles in the face of an increasingly elderly population living with more complex conditions and needing more support, while at the same time traditional fundraising channels are dwindling in the light of the tough economic climate.”

Hospice Chief Executive Peter Holliday adds: “Simon brings a wealth of experience and is well placed to help us tackle the challenges of the years ahead.”

Doctors join Walsall

medical team

St Giles Walsall Hospice’s medical team has been bolstered by the arrival of two new doctors.

Dr Riffat Hussein is an experienced general practitioner who joined the hospice in September, and her expertise will play a vital part in the delivery of our high quality care.

She was joined a month later by oncology and haematology specialist Dr Zameer Begum.

Mayor’s appeal funds nurse for two years

Sarah gains regional

recognition

Congratulations are due to the hospice’s Nursing Director, Sarah Riches, who has been appointed the West Midlands representative for the National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC).

St Giles Walsall Hospice nurse Claire Evanson is being sponsored for a whole 24 months thanks to a hugely successful fundraising drive by the town’s former mayor.

Cllr Gary Clarke donated most of the proceeds of his Mayor’s Appeal when he was in office between 2010 and 2011.

The NCPC is the umbrella charity for all those involved in palliative and end-of-life care in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It works with government, health and social care staff to improve end-of-life care for all.

Claire, whose position has been funded by the appeal for two years, says: “It’s a real personal honour to be funded through the mayor’s appeal.”

Cllr Clarke adds: “Choosing the main recipient of the money was a big decision to make, but I think the public’s response to the appeal shows that it was definitely the right one.”
