Go Green by Taking It to the Streets in Lee County

D iscover many ways

to save money on gas and travel, help the environment and

improve your health by joining Taking It to the Streets!, a regional campaign that urges the use of alternative trans- portation modes and monitoring trips with Trip Track to win prizes donated by local organizations. The initia- tive encompasses Try Transit Day, April 19, when LeeTran will provide free rides all day; a Transportation Expo, with workshops and resources, currently at the Northwest Regional Library, in Cape Coral, through May 1; and area worksite and college campus incentive programs on biking, walking, taking public transit, working from home, starting a car- or vanpool and more.

The city of Fort Myers, Lee County Office of Sustainability, Bike- WalkLee and the Lee County Health Department have joined with the Florida Department of Transporta- tion’s Commuter Services program to organize the program locally. Other activities are listed on the campaign’s Facebook page and campaign orga- nizer websites.

“Individual transportation choic- es can change an entire community,” says Lee County Commissioner and Commuter Services Ambassador Ray Judah. “The goal is to give people and organizations a fun opportunity to take proactive steps to get around our area. For some, those steps will save them a lot of money.”
