Ben Farrin

Founder/Managing Director of The Student Pocket Guide Ltd Twitter: www.twitter.com/thespg www.youtube.com/studentpocketguide

Give us the 30 second elevators pitch on The Student Pocket Guide The Student Pocket Guide Ltd (SPG) is a media company that produces a free, national student magazine, which is distributed to students at university and college at the beginning of each academic term. The publication provides local discounts, student tips, advice and free stuff. We also film exclusive performances and interviews with artists/celebrities which to date includes: Ed Sheeran, Tinie Tempah and Example. We have won multiple business awards including the Barclays ‘Take One Small Step’, Shell LiveWire and Creative Industries first prize.

How did your journey begin?

I had many jobs but never really enjoyed working for someone else. I then focused on a business idea which turned into The Student Pocket Guide. Its unique selling point: to bridge the gap between students at colleges and universities within Norwich and provide local information. Edition one was distributed in September 2005 and was a huge success. I then produced edition two and three. Realising I had a model which I could replicate across different locations I launched The Student Pocket Guide in Essex and Cambridge alone. I continued to expand the business, started to employ staff and raised investment. We now operate across 20 cities nationwide.

What is the best piece of advice you have received so far?

I’m not sure it was advice but the best quote I ever heard, which has stayed with me for many years is “perseverance is incompatible with failure”.
