REAL WEDDINGS | Katie & Gary

How did you two meet? Gary and I met through mutual friends in downtown Charleston one night in late July of 2007. I had just finished graduate school and Gary, who is in the Air Force, had only been stationed in Charleston for about 2 months. We immediately hit it off the first night we met, and a week later we met again at a RiverDogs baseball game where, neither of us being big baseball fans, we talked the entire game. About two weeks later we made it “official”, and spent the rest of that summer getting to know each other.

How long was your engagement? We were engaged on March 6, 2010 in downtown Charleston while on a walk with our Yorkshire terrier, Belle. Our wedding took place on April 10, 2011, so our engagement was just over thirteen months. I spent that entire time planning every detail of our wedding and it ended up being the perfect amount of time. Gary was also deployed from July to October of 2010 so I kept myself busy with any and everything wedding associated.

What inspired your wedding theme? Neither of us are originally from Charleston, and Gary’s family, being from the northern Idaho/Washington state border, had never been to Charleston. I wanted to create a classic, intimate, and southern event that would showcase the city where we fell in love.

What inspired your wedding color palette? My favorite color is blue, so I used a navy and a pale blue with white to keep the colors fresh and clean for our spring garden wedding. These shades of blue were incorporated throughout our wedding in the décor, the bridal party’s apparel, my blue shoes, and the flowers.

What was special about where you got married? We both love the history of Charleston and the gorgeous gardens full of color in the spring, so we chose a private walled garden at the Confederate House right in the center of Charleston’s historic district for our outdoor ceremony. We got married just a few blocks from where Gary proposed! We picked the perfect time of year for an outdoor wedding and were blessed with beautiful weather for our noon ceremony. Our reception was at McCrady’s restaurant, just a few blocks away from the Confederate House so that our guests could walk the cobblestone streets and enjoy the amazing, historic houses and scenery that Charleston has to offer.
