REAL WEDDINGS | Kristyn & Nick

How did you two meet? We met through a mutual friend after we both graduated from college. Our friend Val and Nick grew up across the street from one another, and Val was one of Kristyn’s college suitemates. We crossed each other’s paths at several social outings, and finally started dating after a Memorial Day Weekend party at Val’s parents’ house.

How long was your engagement? One year and three weeks.

What inspired your wedding theme? Long before the barn-wedding theme took the wedding world by storm, Nick knew that I wanted a down-to-earth wedding in a historic barn. Key inspirations included my favorite book, Anne of Green Gables, and its theme of elegant simplicity.

What inspired your wedding color palette? I wanted a soft, romantic palette, and have always loved gray as universally-flattering but unexpectedly neutral. Peach is another favorite color. Chartreuse was to give it some pop so it wasn’t all muted tones. Nick liked navy blue, which worked well with the other colors for stationery.

What was special about where you got married? It was the perfect quintessential big red barn! In early September, pears were on the trees and the apples were beginning to ripen – and you could smell them in the air. We loved the casual atmosphere of the interior of the barn, and the fact that there were outdoor seating areas available. We both love history and “old things” so the historic nature of the barn –which was built in 1904 – suited us perfectly. We were also fortunate to have a beautiful post-storm day for our wedding: a tropical storm blew past the area the night before, which resulted in stunningly beautiful skies.

What do-it-yourself projects did you do? Escort Cards: The largest labor of love were our photo-clothesline escort cards. With the help of our mothers, we found pictures from throughout our lives with nearly every single guest that attended the wedding, and had them copied in black in white. Then we arranged the photos to alternate beside the pictured guest’s escort cards. This was an extremely time-consuming but gratifying project – but we never got to see it in action. We had staged it in a doorway of our apartment the week before the wedding, but by the time we got to the reception site, our guests had already stormed and dismantled it –which is exactly how we hoped they would react! It was so fun to see our cousins and childhood friends toting around pictures of us from our childhood.
