ADVICE | momentsbywayne.com HOW TO SET UPA WEDDING CEREMONY IN

I love a wedding ceremony in the round! There are so many reasons why couples should consider this alternative. It is a great way to “get outside of the box”. The wedding ceremony is all about two people making a life-long commitment to each other in front of their family and friends. Setting up a ceremony in the round enables the guests to view the important moments from every angle. There is great emotion and depth in the faces of the bride and groom, and witnessing it makes the guests feel even more connected.

The Round

The traditional layout for a wedding ceremony is dictated by the layout of most churches, temples and other houses of worship, but with many couples choosing to have their wedding ceremony in less traditional places, it is very easy to transform any space into a ceremony in the round.

The first step is to decide whether you want your guests standing or seated. If you have less than one hundred guests and can keep your ceremony brief, standing may be a good option. You can always provide a few chairs for guests that require seating. Having a standing ceremony changes the mood dramatically – it’s more communal, organic and casual. In keeping with this mood, I recommend a simpler structure and décor, because people are closer to the ceremony and it’s best to give them unobstructed views. A good option would be an arch that frames the bride and groom or in the Jewish tradition, a hand carried chuppah, a wedding canopy made with a prayer shawl attached to four posts.

The next step is to decide on how you would like to walk down the aisle. Ceremonies in the round are great because the options are limitless. Make your entrance and the walk down the aisle truly memorable – have your bride’s maids and groom’s men walk down the “satellite” aisles and reserve the main aisle for the grand entrance of the bride. It’s very dramatic. I’ve done ceremonies where the bride and groom made a complete circle around the wedding canopy before starting the ceremony. It was so moving to see the guests interact with the bride and groom as they walked past!

Some brides like to meander through the guests without following a “straight line”. To create a whimsical garden pathway, line the aisle with potted plants, rocks and candles.

It is still important to keep the focus on the ceremony. I recommend you do this by setting up a riser for the bride, groom and the officiant with a creative structure that looks beautiful from every angle. After the ceremony, move the structure over your cake. Think outside the box for your seating, too – you can rent park benches, ottomans or even use oversized pillows.

Go ahead – be adventurous! Have your wedding ceremony in the round to create uniquely beautiful and memorable moments.
