Three accelerometers are mounted in the x, y and z directions, and three on the electric drive motor. Wärtsilä claimed to be the first company with a condition monitoring system able to measure up to 16 accelerometers continuously and simultaneously, enabling the capture of all events that may lead to problems and defining when and why they occurred. The PCMS was also said to be the first commercial product to measure vibrations on the inside of thrusters using sensors located close to the bearings and gears. Also monitored
are hydraulic pressures, steering pressures, pitching pressures, retraction pressures and shaft rpm.
Lubrication and hydraulic oils are monitored by measuring temperature, oil-water saturation and contamination by metal and dirt. The shaft rotation speed is monitored via an inductive proximity sensor, while the fast torque measurement system monitors torsional vibrations. A PCMS Advisory Monitor included in the onboard equipment acts as the operator interface. Installed on the bridge or in the engine control room, it gathers data from the individual system cabinets and transmits
information daily to Wärtsilä Propulsion Services for analysis. Real-time and trend values are given and, in the event of irregularities, the system immediately alerts an in-house specialist and the shipowner/manager. Service recommendations are made by the appropriate product specialists.
Incoming data is continuously monitored by an automated system and sent by email (or manually) to Wärtsilä on a daily or regular basis. Every month the operator receives a PCMS periodic report prepared by specialists, outlining the key findings and recommendations for the previous monitoring period. The condition and operating profiles of the propulsion equipment and vessel are also covered.
