Integrating packages for optimised propulsion
An MAN propulsion package based on a 6L21/31 medium speed engine incorporating reduction gearbox, shafting and VBS CP propeller
M
ost major enginebuilders are able to deliver complete propulsion packages tailored to a project and optimised to ease delivery logistics, reduce installation and operational costs, and secure full compatibility between the system elements. An attraction to yards and owners is that one supplier takes full responsibility during all phases of procurement, project engineering, installation, commissioning and warranty as well as providing – if required – through-life support. MAN Diesel & Turbo’s backlog of projects was recently extended by an order for a complete propulsion package to serve a ropax ferry ordered by Wehai Haida Ferry Co for deployment between the Chinese cities of Wehai and Dalian on opposite sides of the Bohai Strait in north east China. The route is currently served by Shen Shen 1 and Xin Shen Shen, although the latter is due to be withdrawn.

system will supervise and monitor the installation and MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Frederikshavn facility in Denmark will support integration and optimisation of the full package, which is designed to secure a fully loaded speed of 18 knots. Engine spares have also been ordered by the ferry owner from MAN PrimeServ, the after- sales division of MAN Diesel & Turbo. The latest project extends a long-term relationship forged between the German group and the Huanghai yard, which has built eight ropax ferries with MAN medium speed
propulsion plant. Some 34 licence-built MAN B&W two-stroke engines have also been supplied to the shipbuilder.
Another current project marks the first time that a Chinese licensee of MAN Diesel & Turbo – Zhenjiang CME – will act as supplier for complete propulsion systems, including the propulsion train. The packages are required for two special vessels booked by the China Satellite Maritime Tracking and Controlling Department from Jiangnan Shipyard, part of the China State Shipbuilding Corp. The pair is due for handover in June 2013.
Each vessel will feature a twin-screw plant embracing two six-cylinder MAN L32/40 medium speed engines built by ZJ CME along with MAN-derived reduction gearsets, propellers and propulsion control systems. Each engine will drive a VBS860-type CP propeller via a type 41VO30 MAN Alpha AMG28 gearbox and shafting incorporating a water-lubricated sterntube. An Alphatronic 2000 propulsion control system will be supplied by MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Frederikshavn facility.
