CASTLE IN THE CLOUDS GATEHOUSE In the past few years, restoration

work has been going on at Castle in the Clouds, off season and usually high up on the mountain, well out of public view. This year, however, the Castle Preservation Society has turned its attention to the Lower Gate House, at the road edge on Mountain Road, Rt 171, in Moultonborough, of- fering an exceptional opportunity for the general public to see first hand what is involved in the specialized and delicate work of restoration. The Castle Preservation Society is there- fore offering the public a peek at the progress and process on Wednesday, February 22nd and Saturday, March 10th, between 10am and noon. These free visits will be scheduled every half hour and limited to 8 per group. Res- ervations are required, so please call 603-476-5900 x207 or email jcrom- well@castleintheclouds.org to sign up. Be sure to include a contact phone number so you can be reached in case the tour is canceled due to inclement weather. Over the years the historic Lower

Gate House, originally called “Brook Lodge,” had been slowly deteriorat- ing, as many have observed traveling Rt. 171 or arriving for a visit to the

RESTORATION TOURS OF

Castle. An important component of the landmark “Lucknow” estate, this small gatehouse is the first building a visitor sees, a prelude to the Castle itself mirroring many of its features: timbering, stonework, tile roof, leaded casement windows, decorative hard- ware, fireplace window, to name but a few similarities The location of the Gate House on a much traveled public road presents a wonderful opportunity for the public to experience first hand the meticu- lous restoration work being conducted to the Secretary of the Interior’s stan- dards for restoration. These standards guide all restoration at the Castle complex. Bedard Preservation and Restoration of Gilmanton has been doing most of the restoration work at the Castle and is doing this project as well. The Castle Preservation Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the nearly 100 year old buildings at Lucknow, the former estate of million- aire industrialist Tom Plant. And anyone interested in contribut-

ing to the Castle Preservation Society should contact the Castle headquar- ters at 476-5900 or through the web site at www.castleintheclouds.org.
