a time we had the perfect dog. When we adopted Chi- ca about 8 years ago, she was a sweet, quiet little girl: a regular Shirley Temple among Chihuahuas. Then along came Dually,


a hundred pounds of atti- tude in a five pound pack- age. Dually brought out the inbred protectiveness in Chica that’s in most older females and, before you know it, we’re walking two tiny terrors around the neighborhood each with four paws and mouths at- tached that would melt the ears off a brass monkey with their high pitched barks. When they’re solo, the squeaky barks of these tiny terrors are barely bear- able. When they bark to- gether, birds fall out of the trees. Before we lived in an RV,


for almost five years we owned two big dogs; Great Dane and Doberman big. But two of those wouldn’t fit in our tow truck without a shoehorn. So we down- sized. We figured life would be a lot easier with tiny dogs and it is. It’s also a whole lot nois-


ier. We have hardwood floors


in our house and vaulted ceilings. When Chica barks it’s noisy. When Dually chimes in the walls vibrate, the chandelier shimmies and glasses have been known to crack. But we literally have a


solution. I keep a bottle of veggie spray wash by the sink. Although it’s a harm- less solution, the dogs hate the smell of it because it contains lemon juice. I walk around the house packing a bottle of veggie spray. The dogs know that if they bark for no reason they’re going to get a squirt in the face.

just that; let a barrage of yips and howls fly un- til Momma came around the corner armed with the hated spray. Dually took one look at what was in my hand and froze. He heaved a sigh, lifted his tiny head, flattened his ears and squinted his eyes as if to say, “I know what you’re going to do, so get it over with.” He was so adorable and funny that I took one look at Dually and blasted him anyway. Cuteness goes just so far in this house. It’s gotten to the point


that whenever anyone vis- its, rather than explode our guests’ eardrums before they walk down the hall, we relegate the dogs to solitary confinement in the master bathroom where they can whine and carry on to their hearts’ delight, but nobody will hear them. When our guests settle


down we liberate the dy- namic duo after warning the fur faces to be on their best behavior or they’ll wind up in jail again. This is what we did the other night when our neighbors


came for dinner and un- til we sat down to eat it worked real well. Apparently, somebody


dropped a morsel of food on the floor and all heck broke loose. We have tall pub-like stools in our din- ing area and you never saw two feet fly topside so fast. My girlfriend literally folded herself in two while the dogs slugged it out at her feet. Now, here’s the thing


about Chihuahuas, or mine at least, they can look and sound like they’re going to rip each others’ throats out when in reality it’s the hu- man equivalent of a verbal squabble…words would hurt more than their actual bites. Meanwhile, hoo boy, are they noisy! I scooped up Chica. Jim seized Du- ally. Thirty seconds later they’re back on the floor nuzzling each other which is the doggy equivalent of saying they’re sorry. These altercations hap-


pen maybe every 8 months or so. It’s about Dually challenging Chica for dom- inance. I don’t know why he bothers. Chica emerges alpha every time but Du-

after I assured her that it was no big deal…the dogs were just acting “Chi- huahuary.” Translation: two pint-sized Chihuahuas with the classic Napoleon Syndrome temporarily act- ing like Rocky Balboa on an off day. It took a little while, but


my friend finally relaxed. The peace and quiet


didn’t last long. When Linda got up from


the table she stepped light- ly on Chica’s tail. Chica whirled and dove at Linda’s feet snapping and biting the air, making only light contact. But it was enough to make Linda rise up on her toes and jump around like a Cancan dancer’s feet


being shot at by drunken cowboys in the local sa- loon. Before I could sweep her up Chica suddenly stopped, huffed with great indignation and looked back over her shoulder in disgust as Linda scrambled back up on the chair. Look…if they weren’t


such good friends don’t you think I know that little scene could mean litigation on four paws? At the end of the evening


I took my two little tiny terrors, sat them down, and had a serious discus- sion. Actually, I discussed, while they looked bored and rolled their eyes. I grounded them from fun walks for two days. With- held all cookie treats too and doubled up on my veg- gie spray vigilance. Did it make a difference?


Heck no. But we love them anyway.
