MY FOND MEMORIES OF 5K ROAD RACING
by Jay Evans Contributing Writer
I never ran competi-
tively in school or col- lege before, or even after, world War II. Somewhat later in life, a relatively new amateur sport called white Water Kayak Sla- lom Racing appeared on the local New England scene and caught my in- terest. In those early days it took several minutes to complete a 25-30 gate slalom course in the rap- ids of many close-by New England rapids. In order to keep in shape for people well be- yond their teen-age years, it has been common to go out on the nearby roads and pathways to jog vari- ous distances for aerobic conditioning. The au- thorities at Dartmouth College welcomed the use of the college’s Leverone Field House in Hanover. For we locals, during in- clement weather, a small fee was charged to use this indoor track during lunch time. Eventually, on this in-
door track, while using a track team “rabbit,” I managed to surprise myself by registering a 5.57 mile. That was in the Spring of 1996. I was 71 years old. Apparently it also caught the eye of a well known and respected Lebanon, NH, 5K runner whose name was Bill Mc- Caffrey. He invited me to compete in the local Alice Peck Day Hospital annual 5K Road Race. Since my competitive juices were still flowing, I signed up. The stop watch at the fin- ish line recorded that my run had taken only 24.9 minutes - an all time fast- est for me ! It must have been caused by the ex- citement that surrounded the race itself. At any rate, another devotee be- came enamored by the ca- sual and friendly 5K road races that were growing in popularity throughout New England. One of the joys of run-

ning the 5K, is not only the interesting characters you meet along the way, but the races themselves. The little town of Center Conway, almost on the border with Maine and New Hampshire, once held a 5K in which the entire route was inside a cornfield with last fall’s corn stalks still standing, and occasional puddles of mud. It was worth it, though, after crossing the
finish line, because the first three runners each received a newly baked homemade pie and we were all serenaded out- doors at the finish line by an eight-piece jazz band. My fastest time for a
5K occurred over in Dor- set, Vermont. It occurred when two Dalmations caught up with me early in the race. A girl, with
