among the 172 5Ks completed before the running sneakers were put away for- ever in 2004. The U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers (CAL) at Hanover, N.H., once held a mini 5K in June. Only a scant dozen competitors showed up, but one year an army colonel ap- peared at the start- ing line. At the sound of the whistle he took off like a rumbling tank. Less than half way through the course we runners caught up with him sitting comfortably in a chaise lounge by the roadside smiling and waving a half- empty Budweiser. At another time
in Concord, N.H., A Mike Ceriello 5K was held that ran through a residen- tial district. It was

I stopped to visit him brief ly, but soon found that all the other runners had quickly disappeared around the corner and out of sight. Which way to turn ? I finished dead last. Another humdinger
of a race took place in Newburypor t , MA, starting around 6:30pm. Pretty soon we runners heard the sound of a siren coming along behind us and we thought for sure that some- one ahead of us was hurt and needed an ambulance. Soon two motorcycle cops caught up to us, pretty well cleared See EVANS on 25
