the street and passed on. The local deni- zens fastened their garden hoses to the telephone poles and aimed them at us grateful runners. It was a hot, muggy evening. We were also serenaded by beer drinkers lean- ing out from their second story porches to cheer us on. It certainly added to the festivity of the occasion. Two 5K’s were set

off by cannon fire, one at the start of the race where we runners had to run through some smoke from the gun barrel. This one was in Pem- broke. The other one was over in Brad- ford, where a huge cannon was carted

up to the steps of the Town Hall and fired one salvo that caused echoes all around the nearby hills. A favorite race for

many runners was the Great Island 65+ in Newcastle. The course winded through a quaint quarter of colonial style homes. Often the residents there, still in pajamas and bathrobes, stood on porches and cheered us on as they drank their morning coffee. By way of contrast, one lady beyond the other side of New Hampshire in the outskirts of Norwich, VT., sat out on her front lawn offering us runners a sip of ice tea and a biscuit as we hurried by.

The gesture was ac- knowledged by all. My last, and un-

expected final, 5K started in front of the Hopkins Center near the Dartmouth Green. It was my 172nd race over a nine year period. Not long after the starting gun went off, I no- ticed all 80 runners (mostly college age) had seemed to go off with great speed, and the next thing they all had disap- peared around a cor- ner and were well out of sight. Somehow the muscles didn’t respond. I stopped, turned around in a daze then slowly walked back to my bicycle and pedaled home.
