24 CHAMBERLINK FEBRUARY 2012 Spline gauges China market BY PHILIP PARKIN

A Tamworth company is finding that life as a bigger fish in a smaller pond is paying dividends. Spline Gauges, which makes specialist gauges

for manufacturing industry, is now part of Apex Tools, a 50-50 joint venture between former owner Danaher Corporation and Cooper Industries. Whereas Danaher is a £13.1bn turnover

company, Apex is somewhat smaller at £1.6bn – but that suits Spline just fine. For Spline managing director Malcolm Ryman, his business has a bigger profile within Apex, and is capitalising on that by taking advantage of the company’s customer base and growing market penetration, particularly in China. “We will be able to take advantage of the

knowledge of Danaher and Cooper – and it will be the first time we have had access to China,”

he said. “Danaher is strong in North and South America and China, and Cooper is strong in Europe – so most of the markets are covered. Apex is worldwide also.” Becoming part of Apex has already been a

boost to Spline, with eight new jobs being created at the company, and more in the pipeline, despite the recession.

In a further sign that Spline is making progress within Apex, the company was one of only three subsidiaries invited to address the latter’s annual conference. “Weight for weight, we are outpunching some of the bigger names in Apex,” Mr Ryman said. Spline’s history dates from the foundation of

the company in 1968. It is still at the same base it has occupied since 1970, in the former mining village of Piccadilly. In fact, the company is housed in buildings which were formerly part of Kingsbury Colliery.
