No more Welbeck

DANNY WELBECK looks set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury. The striker, on-loan from

Manchester United, was expected to make a return to action this weekend after coming through training earlier this week. But after a session back at

United’s Carrington base, Wel- beck’s knee began to swell once more, with a suspected torn carti- lage the route of his troubles. Although manager Darren Ferguson remains hopeful the for-

ward will make a return before the end of the campaign, he accepts the prospect of seeing Welbeck in the white of Preston again remains bleak. He said: “He had a reaction to

his knee after training with United on Wednesday. “The way it is looking at the

moment, he will go back there and that will be it, it’s a blow for the lad because he was really enjoy- ing it here.

“After the game on Tuesday I

was talking about how I was look- ing forward to having him back and there didn’t seem to be a prob- lem. “But I got a call from the

physio on Wednesday night that I didn’t really want to answer and I could tell by the tone of his voice that it wasn’t good news. “If the scan shows no opera-

tion is needed, there is the possi- bility that Danny might come

start to his North End career with two goals in eight appearances.. Preston are now down to three

fit strikers, but Ferguson has ruled out the possibility of bringing in a replacement. He added: “We’re down to

three strikers with Stephen Elliott going to Norwich, but I’m not panicking. “Neil Mellor scored on Tues-

day night and Jon Parkin has been in really good form.”

Jon ‘the beast’ Parkin in action against Cardiff in the 3-0 victory at Deepdale last week

JUST over thirty miles away from Plymouth lays the myth that a beast roams the Bodmin moors in search of prey – but on Saturday there will be anoth- er ‘Beast’ in town and this one

is hungry for goals. Known as the ‘Beast’ by all

the fans, Jon Parkin appears to be a cult hero in the terraces and is getting to be quite a popular figure around Deepdale.

So Parkin will be on the

prowl come Three O’clock on Saturday looking to scare the life out of a Plymouth side already low on confidence. North End will be looking to

build upon and put in a last week w Cardiff 3-0.
