tudents and lecturers at UCLan were delighted to win the BBC partnership award for innovation.

The Preston Cuts, the winning project, was a one day real- time multimedia special about the coalition government’s comprehensive spending review and involved students from the School of Journalism.

The award was presented to the Cuts team by writer Victoria Wood at the annual BBC Create and Connect event, hosted in 2011 by UCLan.

“It was a bit of a shock and huge surprise. The team put in a lot of effort and it’s nice to be recognised,” said Andy Halls, executive editor, and now a trainee at The Sun.

Deputy online editor Danny Lee said: “We were up against some stiff competition but I’m glad our team pulled it out the bag.”

Students from across the school worked to produce an eight page newspaper supplement, website, television and radio broadcasts to the same tight deadlines as the nationals.

“The students learnt an enormous amount from the experience in multimedia news gathering,” said BA Journalism leader Deborah Robinson.
