BA (Hons) Jour T

his was the UK’s first undergraduate journalism degree programme and it is accredited by three industry training bodies – the National Council for the Training of Journalists, the Broadcast Journalism Training Council and the Periodi- cals Training Council.

Students are given a solid grounding in all areas of the media in year one, learning traditional skills of reporting, professional writing, interviewing, news gathering and a variety of technical skills. In year two, they learn the skills needed to operate in a converged digital newsroom and in year three, they can specialise in an area of choice.

They also learn about the legal and ethical framework which journalists operate in. They also study the changing media landscape and the issues and concepts journalists need to consider.

Alumni work for the BBC, ITV, Sky, national and regional newspapers, for websites and in the magazine industry. Graduates work all over the world. Alumni have also used their journalism skills to work for small/medium sized en- terprises and even to set up their own businesses. Some use their transferable skills in careers such as public relations, teaching and marketing.

There is an opportunity to study abroad in the second year, either for a full year or just a semester. Students undergo a compulsory placement during their final year. Entry require- ments are BBB or ABB at A2.
