Third TidyTavy Litter Pick Day
THEthird Tidy Tavy litter pick day took place recently with many regular and many new community spirited individuals donning gloves and bin bags to tackle some problem areas around the Tavistock area. Four groups tackled areas such as Pixon Lane, Banawell Street and Battery Lane. Everyone felt a good sense of a job well done by the large turnout of volunteers who in just over two hours filled 39 large sacks of litter and two compost bags of brambles! Although a well organised morning of litter picking was planned by Jane Miller, some volunteers expressed an interest to simply participate by going off on their
help tackle the problem is still strong. A point raised was that we are seeing common areas where litter is dropped, and even a common type of litter. This might mean that only a select amount of people are dropping litter. Naturally, the most difficult aspect of clearing litter is for it not to be dropped in the first place! own routes and mixing a nice walk with a purpose. "That's what I love about Tavistock, people who are happy to just get things done" said Jane.
Once again Phil Jarman, a local
business man, assisted us by collecting heavy bags of rubbish in his 4 wheel drive and taking them to the collection point. Many thanks to Phil as this made the difficult task of moving so much rubbish a lot less challenging! One of our regular volunteers (Hilary Davie) brought along a photo taken during a litter pick organised by Friends Of The Earth back in 1974. saw a handful of volunteers brave horrendous weather to tackle the patches of litter around Tavistock College. Working with the school it's obvious that only a small number of students are causing the litter and now that the areas have been all de-littered, it will be easier to monitor. A spokesperson for the College said that the Tidy Tavy initiative will benefit the whole community and is grateful for the hard work put in by the group over the Christmas Holidays. The college hopes to work closely with the organisers over the coming months to raise awareness of the issue of litter both around the College and in the wider community. With interest growing in the community to band together to help keep Tavistock a great place to live, several members of the public expressed their interest on seeing us picking litter and said they would be keen to help next time. The great work of all the volunteers and seeing how much litter was removed has given lots of encouragement for the next litter pick! Future TidyTavy days are be held on the first
Saturday in the month, next one being Sat 4th February, meeting at the Wharf 10 am. If you'd like to join us, there has been mention of a Valentine theme, but please don't feel you have to! 'We welcome any and all help and advice and would love to hear if you feel a certain area of Tavistock needs to be tackled. As a community our strongest card is ourselves and if people can let us know when and where something needs doing, with your support we can keep Tavistock tidy.'
