Legendary artist Joan Baez will embark on an extensive UK tour beginning in February, including a visit to Plymouth Pavilions on Friday 23rd March 2012.
Baez will be accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell and will feature a repertoire spanning her five-decade career. Since she began her
legendary residency at Boston’s famed ‘Club 47’ and her debut at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival, Joan Baez remains a musical force of nature whose influence is incalculable - marching on the front line of the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King, singing on the first Amnesty International tour and standing alongside Nelson Mandela when the world
celebrated his 90th birthday in London’s Hyde Park.
Her earliest recordings fed a host of traditional ballads into the rock vernacular, before she unselfconsciously introduced Bob Dylan to the world in 1963 and focused awareness on songwriters ranging from Woody Guthrie, Dylan, Phil Ochs, Richard Fariña and Tim Hardin, to Kris Kristofferson and Mickey Newbury, to Dar Williams, Richard Shindell, Steve Earle and many more. 2011 began with the National Recording Academy (US) inducting Baez’s 1960 debut LP on Vanguard Records into the Grammy Hall Of Fame. At the same time, Amnesty International, at its 50th Anniversary Annual General Meeting in San Francisco, bestowed on her the inaugural “Joan Baez Award for Outstanding Inspirational Service in the Global Fight for Human Rights.”
