MBA tailor-made for busy executives SHOW YOU MEAN BUSINESS,
The Portsmouth Business School has re-structured its Executive MBA course to better suit the needs of professional business people in full-time employment
A week induction session at the start of the academic term is followed by just 16 teaching blocks throughout the two-year course, a UK and European residential and six Master Classes. Students need only be on campus around 20 times over two years and can access all resources remotely.
MBA student Heather Short, who is due to finish the course this April, said: “I know it’s a cliché but the MBA really has been a life-changing experience and one that I wouldn’t have wanted to miss. All the unexpected extras and eye-opening opportunities made the course for me.
“There is so much more to it than just going to the University for lectures. In addition to the taught programme there are two residential trips and a series of Master Classes, which cover a range

Short won a scholarship from the Business School to study for the Executive MBA, which is designed for professional business people in full-time employment who wish to study on a part-time basis. She said: “As a self-funding student, I was lucky enough to receive this scholarship which made my tuition fees very affordable.“

Having previously worked at IBM, Short was running her own network marketing business, building a small investment into an international network of 700 traders. Despite being the driving-force behind this rapidly-developing business
Heather Short
she was still keen to do more: “I felt I needed to streamline my ideas, get up-to-date with the world of business again and learn the theory to back up my business experience. The MBA has helped me do exactly that.“
As a result of doing the MBA, Short has now also set up her own consultancy business, which helps SMEs realise their objectives. She said: “Two and a half years ago I never thought I would be doing this but I enjoyed the consultancy
project on the course so much I realised that it was a natural next step. Studying at the Portsmouth Business School has really given me a boost and the skills to make me much more confident in business.“
The Executive MBA is conducted over two years of teaching and a further six months for completion of the research project. It integrates the essential pillars of management – blending strategy with operations, control with change, theory with practice and covering topics which are both generalist and specialist.
The next MBA taster session will be held on Wednesday February 8, or prospective students can visit the Portsmouth Business School’s open evening on Tuesday March 13, which will feature a guest presentation from the marketing director of Sky IQ.

Planning coup secures awards for Terence O’Rourke
Bournemouth-based planning consultancy Terence O’Rourke achieved a double win, picking up two awards at the RTPI South East Region awards.
The firm, which also currently holds the title of RTPI Planning Consultancy of the Year, won the Planning for Business award, as well as being named the overall winner of the night. Both awards related to its work with supercar manufacturer, McLaren Automotive, in which it achieved planning permission for the company’s new state-of-the- art production centre at Woking in Surrey in four months from application to approval.
Tim Hancock, managing director of Terence O’Rourke, said: “To gain consent for such a large development within a greenbelt in such a short amount of time is no mean feat, but we have shown it can be done. This latest award win reinforces the view that Terence O’Rourke’s unique approach to planning really is the way forward.“
In a further coup, the firm helped secure planning permission for a

solar photovoltaic (PV) powered installation in Devon, which will generate up to five megawatts of electricity during the next 25 years without the need to burn precious fossil fuels.
The planning permission means that Langage Solar Park at Plympton can continue in its drive to produce
energy for homes in the south west in a more sustainable way. Financed and developed by Carlton Power, a British energy company, the £15 million Langage solar farm consists of more than 21,000 solar panels and has been built on a 30-acre site.
Terence O’Rourke, which has been advising park owner Carlton Power
for a number of years, was asked to lead the coordination of a planning application for the solar photovoltaic (PV) powered installation on part of the site.
Construction took place last summer and the solar farm is now generating clean electricity for more than 1,000 homes in Devon.
