GETTING TO KNOW BY: ERIN CARBARY

Getting To Know with DATIA Treasurer, Phil Dubois, Drugscan, Inc.

1. How did you first get started in the industry? I graduated from the

University of Central Florida in 1990 after

studying Business Administration- Finance. Te economy was in the midst of a recession and jobs were not plentiful. I found an opportunity to become a field based customer service representative for a Leesburg, FL based lab named Doctors and Physician’s Lab. We primarily serviced physicians and toxicology customers. Soon thereaſter I was promoted into sales. A few years later, I was very fortunate to meet my current business partner (Anthony Costantino, Ph.D.) at American Medical Laboratory. We found we had a kindred spirit in delivering a service model that allows for excellent operations and superior Customer Satisfaction. Seven years aſter Quest Diagnostics acquired American Medical Laboratories, we implemented a business plan and acquired our current business.

2. As you know, DATIA recently released a survey with SHRM. What are your thoughts on the results? I believe this is one of the most impor-

tant initiatives that DATIA could deliver for its membership. As an industry, we relied upon data that was greater than 10 years old (i.e., Navy study, Post Office study, etc…). Te SHRM/DATIA results are fantastic. We now have current and relevant data that shows there is a return on investment for drug testing. Te study clearly proves that drug testing programs significantly improve employee productiv- ity, atendance while lowering turnover and

workers compensation events. Te non- drug testing employers can now be shown that there is data that the study provides economic incentives to employers who implement a drug testing program.

3. How do you feel industry professionals can use the survey to benefit their businesses? It appears to me that most of the new

business that the majority of members pursue is take away business from other drug testing professionals. Perhaps that was due to having to rely upon data that was dated and had litle relevance to non- drug testing prospects. Now that we have current data from a prominent organization such as SHRM, we can show non-drug test- ing organizations that drug testing doesn’t cost – it pays dividends. Te SHRM data will allow us as an industry to expand the current pool of prospects greatly.

4. Where do you see this industry in the next five to ten years? It wasn’t long ago that all we had to be

concerned about is five drugs. Addiction is changing our industry dramatically. We have medical marijuana gaining popular- ity. Calvina Fay reported at the annual DATIA Conference that 80% of medical marijuana was used by 18-25 year olds for pain. Tere are 1,200 pain clinics in Florida. 98 of the top 100 prescribers in the nation for Oxycodone are based in Florida. While legitimate pain clinics do exist to treat those with chronic pain or terminal ill- nesses, unscrupulous clinics, or “pill mills,” merely serve as drug traffickers. Tere are 7 people per day dying due to prescription overdose just in the State of Florida. New designer drugs are being created daily and

are cleverly marketed via the internet to individuals of all ages. As a father of a 6 and 7 year old, I am greatly concerned with how these trends will affect our children’s generation. Te landscape is changing and as an industry we need to change as quickly as possible with new testing methods and utilizing our organization to lobby for rules and laws that will allow us to effectively fight this batle.

5. How do you feel being a member of DATIA’s Board of Directors has changed your experience with this industry? If you are serious about the drug and

alcohol testing industry, serving on the Board is where you want to be. Serving on the Board allows me to help direct the efforts of an organization that represents the membership’s interest on Capitol Hill and with key agencies. Additionally, I am able to grow my business through networking with other DATIA Members. Most importantly, I am able to share in shaping the professionalism and standards of our industry through the courses, webinars and the certification programs that DATIA offers. ❚

Each edition of the DATIA focus will include a Q&A from a DATIA Board Member, Staff Person, Spotlighted Member or Course Instructor. It is our hope that this enables our readers to be better acquainted with DATIA and all of the people that help make it such a successful operation. Stay tuned each edition to meet a new industry peer!
