WHOLESALING CAN be a “monkey see, monkey do” industry, but Bay Headwear, doing business as Florida Trading, refuses to blindly follow the trends. Hong Ung, Florida Trading’s manager, was previously store manager for a major chain and knows what sells well in chains doesn’t necessarily sell in independent stores or fl ea markets. Since Florida Trading began importing and wholesaling in 2005, being different has been its major focus. “We refuse to be a sheep in the market,” Ung says. “There are a lot of wholesalers out there that try to fi gure out what sells from other wholesalers, and just copy them. We’re willing to experiment with new items and think outside the box. There are millions of items out there to bring into the market, so why would we want to do the same thing that other people are doing?”
