shopfront promotion INDEX A Stark Contrast...
Art is a great investment at the moment and one Canterbury gallery is showcasing some amazing talents – and they’re all British.
Katie Turrell dropped in for a private view of the superb paintings and sculpture
houses the Stark Gallery. You can’t miss it between the white faces of the Georgian terrace. Inside lies something a little bit different too. Up and coming artists, brand new artists, emerging artists... This gallery isn’t about big names, it’s about big talent. Three names to look out for on display are Mark Hall, Terry Watts and Caroline Yates. Mark Hall is a sculptor from Dorset whose work is infl uenced by the nature of autumn. His bronze sculptures of split horse chestnuts are executed in amazing detail. Hall also brings humour into his work by gently manipulating the shapes of nature to represent forms of the body. Terry Watts is an award winning RBA
N
artist who paints stunningly realistic landscapes. His paintings have a photo realism to them which captures the mood of the scene along with the precise use of colours. The landscapes give the impression of large scale emptiness with a majestic natural beauty. Caroline Yates’ work captures the
anonymity and movement of the crowd scene. Her paintings are about life’s
estled between the towering town houses of Castle Street in Canterbury is the red brick building that
journey, our encounters, sometimes fl eeting, sometimes enduring, addressing the measured but unconscious chapters of our lives. The repeated patterns and use or absence of boundaries in her work give the feel of endlessness. As the editor of Canterbury
Index, Mary Gold pointed out in our last issue, buying a piece of art is a fantastic investment right now, despite the rest of the fi nancial world falling to pieces. Invest in a piece of art at the
Stark Gallery, and you know you are also directly and positively affecting the artist. It’s a good feeling, and even if you’re not looking to spend a huge amount, you can still invest in one of the Stark’s amazing independent jewellery makers. The designer pieces come from all over the British Isles and each piece is unique, which is a blessed relief from the mass- produced throwaway items on the high street. (A subtle hint to the men reading - any of these pieces would make an amazing Valentine’s Day present!) The gallery also provides a
competitively priced bespoke framing service, with a wide range of frames available.
