The Look of Love...

A break from the traditional is what we’re offering this Valentine’s month. Instead of the tragic Romeo and Juliet style romances, here’s something a little bit cheerier and a little bit cheekier. On the 6th the Gulbenkian Theatre is showing Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor, with a less traditional tale of love in a 1950s setting (7.45pm, tickets £16, available from kent.ac.uk/gulbenkian). On the 14th (the big day itself) at the Gulbenkian, comedian Richard Herring is performing his show What is Love Anyway? Providing a tongue in cheek view of romantic gestures in our modern culture (7.45pm, tickets £15). If you want to treat the lady in your life, then the Marlowe Theatre has Calendar Girls starring Linda Bellingham from the 13th to the 18th. This is a warm and touching story which will have you laughing and (if you’re anything like me) crying too (7.30pm with some matinee performances, tickets from £16.50 to £37, available at marlowetheatre.com). If it’s a man you’re trying to impress, then take him to the Gulbenkian on the 20th to see comedian Russell Kane and

Had enough of Romance?

If you have no interest in presenting little paper hearts this month or hearing another love song, then here are some gritty reminders of real life. Bound is a play about six people dealing with their harsh lives in the West Country fi shing port of Brixham (at the Gulbenkian, 7.45pm, tickets £7 to £13). There are also the tales of two of the 20th Century’s most tyrannical dictators: Stalin’s Favourite on the 8th and Defying Hitler on the 9th. The fi rst tells the story of Konstantin Siminov who was Stalin’s favourite poet (7.45pm, tickets £11) and the second tells the story of a German everyman, trying to come to terms with the Nazi regime (7.45pm, tickets £11).

For something a little lighter, there are some fantastic classical concerts including A Ceremony of Carols presented by the Richard Alston Dance Company. This energetic and majestic show is on the
