The Noss Marina Seine Boat

Seine boats were used for hundreds of years in the River Teign and around its bar to catch salmon in nets (or seines). These nets were 180 metres long and weighed 500 Kilograms. They therefore needed powerful and safe boats to fish handle them. The River Teign Seine boat was developed for this task, was 17 feet long and was constructed of clinker planked larch. The boats were sailed or rowed by four men.

Alan Chaney, a local boat-builder rescued a surviving wooden seine boat, repaired it and took a fibreglass mould from it. From this mould were built the modern Seine Boat Class which is used for racing in the River Teign Rowing Club’s series.

The staff at Noss have formed a rowing team and now have their own seine boat donated by the Marina owners. The rowing team are proud to represent Noss and are extremely grateful to the Company for buying the boat for them. They hope to represent Noss well. They will be entering the Teignmouth rowing club seine boat series next year. The series will take place every second Saturday from the end of May through to the end of August. The racing courses are set from Teignmouth beach and can last up to forty five min- utes and sea conditions can vary from those of mill pond to heavy seas. The team practice from Dartmouth out to sea as much as possible and will be doing so even during the winter.
