RNLI
It has proved to be a busy year with 38 launches to mid November. If lives are thought to be in danger we will always launch with alacrity and endeavour to provide the best possible service for those who enjoy our waters, be it at sea or on our wonderful river and estuary.
On New Year’s Day 2011 Dart Lifeboat launched after a report of what was thought to be a windsurfer in trouble off Slapton Sands. The search revealed a bunch of festive helium balloons floating offshore! It was a false alarm, but with good intent. In the spring the lifeboat launched to assist a 32-foot yacht that was unable to free itself from a crab pot near the Skerries buoy. A lifeboat man entered the water and was able to free her from the crab line.
August is always our busiest month. On the 8th a holidaymaker collapsed on Castle Cove and was evacuated from the beach to an Ambulance waiting on the Ferry slip and at ten past midnight on the Tuesday of Regatta, whilst the Regatta Ball was in full swing, we launched to a man who had attempted to swim across the river at the Higher Ferry. A foolish act at any time, but even more so in the dark. The crew located him in midstream and a tragedy was surely averted. Again on the Saturday of Regatta the Dart Lifeboat was diverted to three serious incidents in the space of eight minutes at the entrance to the harbour.
