YLW NEWS HELPING CHILDREN FLY
Whisking 62 special children from the BC Southern Interior for a day to the happiest place on earth is no small undertaking. YLW, its staff, tenants and volunteers play a critical role. On December 6, 2011, the Sunshine Foundation Wendy’s DreamLift to Disneyland departed on an Alaska Airlines B737-800 to the John Wayne International Airport in Orange County, California.
The children on the flight have severe physical disabilities and/or life threatening illnesses. Many are wheelchair dependant and are required to bring important medical devices to assist them during their adventure. On this particular day, Sunshine children didn’t have to worry about hospitals, doctors or being different. For many, this was the first time they have been away from their families or perhaps their first time on a plane.
The day was an early start for everyone involved. The children, the medical team, organizers and volunteer “buddies” arrived at YLW bright and early by 4:30

am for their 7 am departure. After a fun-filled magical day, the tired travellers returned home just before midnight the same day.
The next Wendy’s DreamLift Day fundraiser is scheduled for Wednesday, January 25, 2012. We encourage you to enjoy a meal at Wendy’s on that day, knowing that the proceeds are
channeled into this extraordinary event. If you or someone you know has a child between the ages of 3 and 18, and you are interested in nominating them for a DreamLift flight, please contact the Sunshine Foundation of Canada at

WHAT ARE PEOPLE SAYING ABOUT YLW?
READ WHILE YOU WAIT CHILDREN’S EBOOK
Inherent in air travel is the big “W,” waiting; fortunately, YLW has free WiFi for your convenience. If you have children who are getting a bit impatient, local author John Bracey has created a quickly downloadable eBook to keep your little guys entertained while you
wait. “The Tears of Ma” follows the adventures of eight animal friends: Rica the lion, Sia the bear, Euro the squirrel, Nam and Sam the eagles, Aus the kangaroo, Tica the dolphin and Ma the monkey. This tale will introduce your own mini-adventurers to the names, shapes and locations of the continents of our world. By embarking on this journey together you will be able to orient them on where they are and where they are going.

Thanks to Air Canada for looking after me so well during my travels, and a special thanks to Catherine B who works at the check-in counter at Kelowna Airport. She went out of her way to ensure I got a flight home to Ireland in time for the funeral. Please if you are travelling through Kelowna International Airport and Catherine is on duty, just say hi and thanks; she is a special person.

With all the improvements, our airport is now an awesome, easily travelled airport!
