“I love the Red Deer region,” says Allard. “It has amazing people, wonderful bike and walking trails, all the recreation facilities you can imagine, schools that range from International Baccalaureate programs to trades, and very diverse cultural programs.”

Her reasons for choosing Red Deer seem to be shared by many others, as indicated by the city’s growing population. In May 2006, the city was home to 82,772 people – an increase of 22 percent since 2001, and the number has since increased upwards of 90,000.

But there’s more to Red Deer than just the amenities. Since it lies in the heart of the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor, Red Deer is often referred to as Canada’s Economic Capital.

“Red Deer’s business climate is very positive – in all its industries,” says Stayer. It’s the only city in the Canadian prairies with a potential market of more than two million people within a 160-kilometre radius. It has an active labour force, a wide range of

educational opportunities and an ever- diversifying economy. It also has a low unemployment rate compared to the national average and the lowest overall taxes in the country.

Of course, the fact that it is only a 75-minute flight from Kelowna is appealing too. In fact, Steenstra says that Kelowna rated as the fifth most popular destination from Red Deer, which is why Northwestern Air saw the benefit to adding in regularly scheduled flights.

“Providing air service between the Okanagan and Central Alberta makes great business sense for the growth of

our airline, “says Gordon Bush, General Manager of Northwestern Air. “As demand grows we hope to add more frequency to the schedule to further serve the two regions.”

That means, flights could continue on to Vancouver or Abbotsford, further enhancing the service. Passengers will enjoy a smooth flight on Northwestern Air’s Jetstream 31 aircraft, a 19-seat pressurized turbo-prop that will leave from Red Deer to Kelowna and back again on Friday morning and again Sunday afternoon. “It will add complete convenience,” says Allard enthusiastically. “I can’t wait!”
