The Glazing Technician
Purefreedom suppliers of complete van mounted Water Fed Pole systems
My name is Tim Hughes and I think myself lucky enough to have found my calling in life as a window cleaner, or “the glazing technician” as my friends refer to me now.
Leaving university after studying business and finance I embarked upon the exciting career of 9 till 5, not realising then that I spent half the time gazing outside through panes of glass which has now become the source of a great career for me, as they say ‘things are often staring you right in the face’.
For the best part of 8 years I worked in a role that today has the same stigma attached as a traffic warden, a Financial Adviser. Working within a very structured industry, being the politest way I can refer to my time as a Financial Adviser, I came to the conclusion I needed to seek a new career path away from the shackles of a 9 to 5 post, and find something to rejuvenate my normally motivated and enthusiastic personality.
My eureka moment occurred whilst walking along a street and seeing a window cleaner using a water fed pole. Intrigued I struck up conversation and he explained briefly how this new system of cleaning windows worked. After dwelling on this conversation for a few days I began to casually surf the internet for more information. This casual surfing soon became an obsession, spending hours at the computer feeding my need for information and finding the answers to endless questions. Do I need an RO or DI system, trolley or a van system, fan or nozzle jets, it seemed like I was learning a new language.
Asking friends, family and a couple of commercial contacts I had, the cost, frequency and the time taken to clean the properties I realised that the opportunity to earn good money was easily achievable. The low start up costs and the benefit of owning a company with repeat business whether weekly, monthly or greater gave great security and reassurance along with the ability to accurately forecast figures.
The job appealed to me in so many ways, from the variety of work it offers, from sales to marketing. Customers ranging from Corporate Managing Directors, to pensioners offering endless cups of tea accompanied by out of date cakes, to even once a very suspicious looking bowl of what I was informed was egg custard. Regretfully I declined having just had my sandwiches!
Working outside and being your own boss and reliant upon only yourself must be the biggest appeal for me, and with no day being the same adds the variety needed to stay enthusiastic and motivated.
Watching a series of Dragons Den, one dragon once commented that unless you bore your family and friends to tears with a business venture it will never succeed. If the level of success was measured by this alone I think I would secure investments from all the dragons, as I am sure anyone close to me would agree.
I have not looked back since changing career so dramatically and am pleased of that fateful day I struck up conversation with the guy “fishing”. I am just pleased I refrained from asking what he caught because no doubt I would not have been the first that day and we all know not the last. I am excited and intrigued where the next year will take me and equally if I have the stomach for the egg custard after all.
