Teenager is set to enjoy the high life
A Norfolk teenager has reached some dizzy heights in celebrating her 18th birthday!
In doing so Billie-Jo Mills, from Great Moulton, is also the youngest person in the UK to qualify to be able to tackle some of the country’s highest structures.
She has been working in the office of Sky High Rope Access for a couple of years but always wanted the outdoor life. Now she has qualified as an Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) technician on the first day she was old enough to be assessed.
“I have always liked rock climbing and never had a fear of heights, so am absolutely delighted to have got my qualification. It’s all very exciting,” said Billie-Jo.
It is a great boost to her as she was bullied at school which left her with low self esteem and confidence. But Sky High Rope Access has given her an opportunity to prove herself as a confident individual.
Her assessment, which consisted of a written exam and practical work, lasted three hours and included Billie-Jo having to rescue a simulated unconscious ‘casualty’.
Now she will be able to clean and maintain some of the tallest structures, be it windows in offices or wind turbines. Her first job will be cleaning windows in the tall apartments opposite Norwich City Football Club.
This is set to be the first step on her career and she hopes within the next two to three years to have progressed to be a Level 3 technician meaning Billie-Jo will be supervising others.
The IRATA qualification is internationally recognised and so the world really could be Billie-Jo’s oyster!
