DECEMBER 2011 Rest Haven Baby Basics of Greater Hager-
stown has been dispensing dia- pers and kindness to local fami- lies for more than a year. The nonprofit totally volunteer or- ganization buys and distributes diapers and provides emotional support to low-income working families not on government as- sistance who are struggling to make ends meet in these espe- cially tough economic times. In 2005, Rest Haven Presi-
dent Charles Brown heard a Na- tional Public Radio story about Baby Basics, a program started in 1992 by Jean Ann Lynch. Lynch had looked for a way to help hard-working families and learned that no social agency provides assistance for the pur- chase of diapers. Diapers are expensive: The annual retail cost of diapers for one baby av- erages nearly $500. Insufficient diaper changes and diaper rashes can make babies cranky and test the patience of parents already stressed by harsh eco- nomic realities. The national program has
grown and currently has 13 independent local affiliates. Charles Brown asked his wife, Pat, to listen online to that radio report. The couple co- founded Baby Basics of Greater Hagerstown Inc., and with a donation from Antietam Ex- change Club, the program got started in January 2007.
Supports Baby Basics Run by a small staff of vol-
unteers, Baby Basics of Greater Hagerstown distributed more than 22,000 diapers in the pro- gram’s first nine months of op- eration — April through Decem- ber 2007. “Its so nice to know of a charity where 100 percent of the donations go to the cause,” Charles Brown said. The program is currently
serving 23 qualifying babies from birth to age 3, said Deb Ebersole, the group’s treasurer. Many are referred by health or social service agencies. Volunteers distribute diapers
to the families in the library of Girls Inc. of Washington Coun- ty. Volunteers get to know the families and babies. “We want to have a relationship,” Eber- sole said. With more volunteers and
cash contributions, Baby Ba- sics of Greater Hagerstown can grow. Baby Basics needs volun- teers. “We know what it takes,” said Pat Brown. “We can now train volunteers.” The program is so practical, so close to home, she added. It’s one way to be able to do something to make a difference in the lives of local families. To volunteer, call 240-217-
